The Greek Language Centre was founded in 1992 and is located in Thessaloniki.
It is a Legal Entity of Private Law (N.P.I.I.D.) of non-profit character and is supervised by the Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs.
It is included in the scientific research institutions of the country, as a designated institution for the scientific description and documentation of the trends of the Greek language at home and abroad.
The Centre for the Greek Language is the exclusive official body of the Greek State for the granting of the State Certificates of Attainment in Greek.
The mission of the Centre for the Greek Language is the research of the Greek language and literature, the research of language education and policy, the certification of Greek language proficiency, the production of research and teaching material and everything else that contributes to the promotion and dissemination of the Greek language, the linguistic support and assistance of the returning and expatriate Greeks as well as the support of teachers of the Greek language at home and abroad.
