Music & Art with Socially Vulnerable Groups (PAMAK)

The Centre for Continuing Education and Lifelong Learning of the University of Macedonia, organizes a Distance Learning Programme, entitled: “Music & Music & Art with Socially Vulnerable Groups: Theory and Applications for Formal, Non-formal and Informal Educational Contexts, Community, Social and other Institutions” of 400 hours and 9 months duration, which will be conducted remotely using the method of modern and asynchronous tele-education .

For participants to understand:

  • The categories and characteristics of socially vulnerable groups (poor, refugees, disabled, elderly, addicts, etc.)
  • The basic principles of organising and implementing programmes with socially vulnerable groups in various formal, non-formal and informal educational contexts as well as in the context of social/community and other institutions
  • The importance of personal and social identity development for the process of social integration
  • The contribution of creative expression and the arts to the development of personal and collective identity
  • Differentiating the organisation and implementation of programmes according to the characteristics of socially vulnerable people and the context in which they are implemented
  • The function of music, music therapy and art in general in the organisation and implementation of programmes for socially vulnerable groups

  • Personal creative music and artistic expression
  • Communicating with different categories of people at risk of social exclusion
  • Preparation and organisation of individual and group musical and artistic activities with various categories of people/groups threatened with social exclusion.

The programme is addressed to:

  • Artists

  • Unemployed
  • Students
  • People who are interested in learning more and developing skills necessary if they wish to eventually work with people or groups at risk of social exclusion (poor, disabled, elderly, refugees, people with delinquent behaviour, etc.) in the context of various educational, recreational, care or living arrangements for such people/groups.

  • Socially vulnerable groups: Definitions and characteristics
  • Music and art in the service of social inclusion: basic principles and examples of community music education from the global community
  • Creative expression, personal identity and social inclusion
  • Areas of musical and musical activities with children and adolescents – Teaching/learning methodology
  • Musical and intercultural activities in formal and informal educational and community contexts
  • Music, Psychology and Improvisation: theory and applications with socially vulnerable groups in therapeutic, educational, formal and informal contexts
  • Music education and music therapy with socially vulnerable groups and people with disabilities – Theory and applications
  • Music with premature babies
  • Music with healthy older people and older people with dementia or other illnesses – Intergenerational projects
  • Music and rehabilitation
  • Introduction to sand play therapy for children and adults

PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE* (OBSERVATION – FIELD APPLICATIONS)15 hours of physical presence in the field, 15 hours of supervision-discussion with the supervisor, and 20 hours for writing the relevant observations and reflections of the Practical Exercise: (a) field observation or elaboration of field actions (15 hours), (b) narrative recording of these actions with critical reflection (15 hours), and (c) supervision (discussion with the supervisor – 20 hours). Mode of delivery The programme will be implemented entirely at a distance (asynchronous training).
However, it will include some face-to-face laboratory sessions in Thessaloniki, which will be videoed and posted on the platform for those participants unable to attend).
It will also include Practical Training which can be carried out under the participant’s responsibility either in Thessaloniki (in proposed venues with programme supervisors) or in an organisation of the participant’s choice in his/her city of residence or elsewhere.
The Practical includes 15 hours of physical presence at the organisation of choice and is carried out under the participant’s responsibility as regards the choice of the organisation, the communication with it and the implementation of the monitoring.
Detailed instructions will be given to participants after the start of the programme.

Programme evaluation In order to complete all the requirements of the programme and for their evaluation, participants must successfully complete the Practical Training and at least two of the short exercises/tasks requested, which will be included in the participant’s e-portfolio that will be evaluated. The Portfolio will contain: PART A: PRACTICAL EXERCISE, with the following sub-parts:

  • Logbook of Field Observations/Activities Certification
  • Recording of observations/field practice actions per teaching hour-session
  • Critical reflection on the observation/field action per teaching hour-session, following discussion with the supervisor of the practice

PART B: PROJECTS (here will be included the two small projects that the participant will choose to do)
